11th Annual International Bhikkhuni Day

Celebrate the re-emergence and flourishing of the bhikkhuni sangha on International Bhikkhuni Day (IBD)! Consider creating an event at your sangha or home on September 19, 20, 21 or any convenient date close to the September full moon. Or simply take some time on your own to acknowledge the importance of the bhikkhuni sangha.

This year we encourage you to consider the topic of “The Significance and Challenges of Bhikkhuni Tradition, — Past, Present, and Future.” This theme has been created by the Maha Bodhi Society of India for International Bhikkhuni Day, and one in which the Alliance for Bhikkhunis would also like to explore. The Maha Bodhi Society of India, in conjunction with Sakyadhita Sri Lanka and the Korean Bhikkhu-Bhikkhuni Mahasangha, organized and offered the first 1996 Sarnath Isipatana Bhikkhuni Ordination that opened the way for the revival of the Theravada Bhikkhuni Sangha.

Additionally, the Maha Bodhi Society encourages us to contemplate the following questions:

  1. Question of Bhikkhuni Order and its non-recognition in Theravada Buddhist countries.
  2. “Sukha Sanghassa Samaggi” — Happy indeed is the unity of the Sangha.
  3.  Contribution of Bhikkhuni Sangha in propagation of Dhamma.
  4. Emergence of Theravada Bhikkhuni Order.
