Volunteer

"Our true wealth is our growing volunteer staff that is dedicated to helping Theravadin bhikkhunis worldwide. Please join us - welcome!

-AfB Founder & President Susan Pembroke

The Alliance for Bhikkhunis depends almost entirely on dedicated, caring, creative volunteers to do our work. Without the generous giving of time, talents, and energy by volunteers, we would not be here. Please consider joining the AfB family so that this important work can continue. Ultimately, protecting the Bhikkhuni Sangha falls to people, to you and me.

VOLUNTEER POSITIONS:

President

The Board of the Alliance for Bhikkhunis (AfB) is searching for a new president for our board. Susan Pembroke, who founded the AfB, is resigning as president on October 21, 2012. We are grateful for her dedicated work on behalf of bhikkhunis and wish her well in her new endeavors.

Any prospective applicant should be grounded in Theravada Buddhism and be deeply committed to protecting the Bhikkhuni Sangha worldwide. In addition to implementing the goals and vision of the AfB, the incumbent would oversee the board and its development as well as AfB’s ongoing activities and operations.

Candidates should have strong leadership and communication skills, previous non-profit board experience, and work well with people. In addition, this position involves traveling to meetings and conferences worldwide as well as visiting bhikkhunis to become acquainted with their challenges and needs.

Treasurer

This individual should also reside in California, have accounting or bookkeeping experience as well as knowledge of Excel and other software programs, and be available to attend Board meetings via conference calls.

The incumbent’s responsibilities include: recording donations and depositing them by appropriate means; reporting new donors’ addresses to the Secretary; making payments as authorized by the Board; reviewing and reconciling monthly bank statements; reviewing periodic reports from income sources such as PayPal and FirstGiving; maintaining complete income and expense records; presenting a report on these records at each Board meeting; taking steps necessary to ensure the timely filing of state and federal taxes; and providing other financial reports as requested by the Board.
