Submission Guidelines
Present publishes writing and artwork on a wide range of topics about—and relevant to—bhikkhunis and the Theravada Fourfold Assembly.

We welcome unsolicited articles, essays, scholarly investigations, non-fiction, news, reviews, photographs, artwork and illustrations. We do not accept unsolicited book reviews. Submissions must be original works not currently under review by another journal. If an article has been previously published, please ensure that you have copyright permission to reprint.

Before submitting to Present, we ask that you familiarize yourself with our publication so that you have a strong sense of the type of material we publish. Consider topics you know well and/or that will offer special interest and appeal to our readers. We ask that you research your topic thoroughly, back up your expressed opinions with verifiable facts and persuasive arguments, interview a range of relevant sources as the topic requires, and hold on to relevant documentation for fact-checking purposes. Please ensure that any statistics that appear in your article are accurate and come from a reliable source (please cite sources).

We prefer MS Word documents (.docx or .doc) in an 11-pt Times New Roman font. We can also accept submissions in the following formats: .txt, .rtf, .html, or pasted in the body of an email. Be sure to include your contact details, an estimated word count, and a list of recent publications (if applicable). A brief (1 sentence) biographical sketch of yourself, and a summary of your article is also required.

Photographs, including images of original artwork or illustrations, are encouraged. Good quality test submissions (<1MB jpeg, uncompressed) should be sent prior to sending large image files. Make sure to include your name, address, phone number and e-mail address. If a test submission is approved, detailed guidelines for submitting final images will be provided.

If your work is accepted for publication, you can expect to participate in an intensive, collaborative editing process until consensus is reached between yourself and the editor on a final draft. On average, be prepared to take your submission through two or three rewrites over the course of a month.

WE DO NOT PAY FOR ANY MATERIAL SUBMITTED. Unused material will not be returned.

Please submit copy, photos, and illustrations by email to the editor.
